Just in time for the official Kolab 3.3 release, our Gentoo packages for Kolab 3.2 became stable and ready to use. This will clear the way for the upcoming release of Kolab 3.3 for Gentoo. Altough this release won’t bring any major changes, it prepares the ground for upcoming developments and new features in Kolab 3.3. Further, with Kolab 3.2 we introduced an upgrade path between Kolab releases for Gentoo and we will try our best to keep updates as consistent and comfortable as possible.

A lot of work has been done by the Kolab developers to support the new features of the upcoming Cyrus IMAP 2.5 including support for event notifications, xconversations and full-text indexing. Unfortunately, Cyrus 2.5 is neither announced on the Cyrus IMAP website nor available in Gentoo Portage. The latest available ebuild is net-mail/cyrus-imapd-2.4.17. Since most of the Cyrus 2.5 features are not yet available in the Kolab clients, we decided to skip Cyrus 2.5 in this release and ship the Cyrus 2.5 ebuilds in the upcoming 3.3 release.

CalDAV/iCal support

Next to official features that made it into the 3.2 release, we also merged our CalDAV/iCal support support into the calender plugin. Since the release of the CalDAV/iCal feature in Kolab 3.1, we got great feedback and support from both, the Kolab and Roundcube communities including bug reports, bug fixes and code contributions. Thank you, your help is greatly appreciated!

Upgrade path

We think that a continuous upgrade path is important for easy maintenance and high availability. Unfortunately, the Kolab upstream packages only come with an initial setup script which expects a fresh installation, overwrites any existing configuration files and hence is a one-way street and lacks of any update support. In order to improve this in Kolab 3.2 for Gentoo, we started to provide a migration path from Kolab 3.1 to 3.2. We also plan to provide something similar for future releases.

Detailed instructions about how to install, update, configure and troubleshoot the Kolab groupware on a Gentoo system can be found in our Dokuwiki. We appreciate any help to further improve the Kolab overlay. Feel free to send us feedback or file bug entries in our Gitlab.
